A Picton man has been charged with murder in connection with a suspicious fire at a Napanee transitional home on August 3.
Lennox and Addington OPP charged Andrew James Thompson, 31 with murder, criminal harassment, and arson.
Just before 8:15 p.m. on the evening in question, Lennox and Addington (L&A) County OPP, along with the Greater Napanee Fire Department and Hastings Quinte Paramedic Services, responded to a fire at a multi-dwelling residence on John Street, Greater Napanee. A 67-year-old resident, identified as Walter Lasher, was transported to the hospital by ambulance and pronounced deceased a short time later.
Mr. Thompson remains in police custody.
The L&A County OPP Crime Unit is continuing the investigation under the direction of the Criminal Investigation Branch, in conjunction with the Office of the Fire Marshall and the Office of the Chief Coroner and the Ontario Forensic Pathology Service.

With assistance from the Financial Transactions and Reports Analysis Centre of Canada (FINTRAC), members of the Prince Edward County OPP have charged a local man with a litany of fraud-related offences.
As a result of an investigation of offences dating back several years, Paul Marconi, 65, was charged with 15 counts of both fraud and theft over $5,000 and four counts of making false loans. Losses are estimated to be over approximately $500,000.
The accused was released from custody and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Picton on August 28, 2024.
The investigation is continuing and anyone with information surrounding these incidents is being urged to contact police at 1-888-310-1122.
Prince Edward OPP have laid firearm charges in relation to a shooting at a Union Street residence over the Victoria Day weekend.
Joshua Cronkwright, 30, from Prince Edward County was charged with possession, careless use of firearm, and public mischief.
On May 20, 2024, shortly after 2 a.m., officers were called to an address on Union Street in Picton where a firearm had been discharged and one individual was transported to the hospital with serious injuries.
Mr. Cronkwright has been released from custody and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Picton at a later date.
