A collision involving a cyclist and a motor vehicle closed the intersection of Hwy 62 and Union Rd on Sunday.

Prince Edward OPP report the cyclist did not survive the collision and the family has been notified.

No further details will be released with regard to to the cyclist’s identity.

The driver of the motor vehicle was not injured and an investigation is currently ongoing into the circumstances surrounding the collision.

In other police news:

•On Wednesday, Sept. 19, officers attended the Petro Canada gas station at 5529 Hwy 62 after a report of a male who did not pay for fuel. The police requested information from the public on the unknown male who was captured on video surveillance and was described as approximately 35-50 years old, reddish brown or blonde hair, long in the back, a reddish scruffy beard, and heavy set.

The man was seen wearing a black baseball hat on backward, a black hoodie, a black windbreaker over top with fluorescent green panels on the arms, a black shorts, white socks and black flip flops. 

The vehicle being driven by the male was a 2006-2008 Ford Escape XLT greenish in colour and departed the gas station north bound towards County Road 3.

Prince Edward County OPP would like to thank everyone coming forward and helping identify the individual involved in this occurrence.

As a result of the investigation, a 41-year-old Picton man was arrested and charged with theft under $5000 in accordance with the Criminal Code of Canada section 334(b). 

The male was released on a promise to appear with a court date of Oct. 24, 2018 in Picton.

•On Sept. 21, the OPP responded to a break-and-enter that occurred on Foster Road. The incident happened sometime between Sept. 20 at 2 p.m. and Sept. 21 at 5 p.m. 

Unknown suspect(s) entered the home which is under construction and took approximately $20,000 worth of tools and machinery including a furnace, HRV system and a generator.

Also taken were interior light fixtures and drills.

Police are continuing with their investigation and are asking that anyone with information regarding this incident or if anyone had witnessed any unusual activity in that area to contact the OPP Provincial Communications Centre at 1-888-310-1122 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222- 8477(TIPS).

•Just before 10 p.m. Saturday, the OPP was notified of a northbound vehicle travelling erratically on County Rd. 4. 

Police located the involved vehicle on Hwy 62 and conducted a traffic stop.

Upon speaking with the driver, the officer observed an odour of an alcohol and, as a result of the investigation, a 53-year-old Belleville man was charged with impaired operation and operating a vehicle with over 80 mg blood/alcohol content.

The man was also found to be driving under suspension and was charged accordingly.

The accused was released on a promise to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice in Picton Oct. 10.

Along with the aforementioned charge and a pair of non-related three-day suspensions issued on Sept. 21, 2018, Prince Edward OPP have investigated and laid 45 alcohol-related traffic enforcement charges in 2018 year.
