There was little down time for members of the OPP serving at the Prince Edward Detachment as accidents, investigations in impaired driving and public disturbances kept local officers busy this civic long weekend.

Police are still investigating a horrific crash that took place on County Rd 4 near Fry Rd. on Saturday afternoon. Prince Edward OPP responded to a collision involving a car and a motorcycle just after 2:20 p.m. Prince Edward County Fire Rescue and Hastings EMS and ORNGE Air Ambulance responded to the collision in Hallowell ward.

The male driver, 30, and the female passenger, 28, on the motorcycle were transported to Kingston General Hospital. Police say there were no injuries were sustained by the car driver.

Prince Edward County Roads Department set up road closures while officers including Technical Collision Investigators (TCI) investigated. The investigation in still ongoing.

In other police reports issued following the Civic Holiday weekend, officers at the Prince Edward Detachment investigated four alcohol related incidents.

On Fri., Aug. 2, just before 1:00 p.m., Sandbanks Provincial Park staff alerted Prince Edward OPP to a vehicle that had been pulled over as a possible impaired driver on Outlet Road. Before the park warden could identify the driver, a male opened the vehicle door and fled on foot into the wooded area. An investigation found that the male driver was prohibited from driving.

Jamal Palacious, 27, from Picton, ON was arrested on Aug, 3, 2019 and charged with Operation while Prohibited – Section 320.18 Criminal Code, Obstruct Peace Officer – Section 129 Criminal Code and Driving while under suspension – Section 53 Highway Traffic Act.  The accused was released and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Picton on Wednesday, Sept. 11, 2019.

Later on Friday, an OPP officer conducting traffic enforcement on County Road 3 in Ameliasburgh stopped a vehicle for exceeding the posted 80 km/hour speed limit.  As part of the officer’s investigation, a Roadside Screening Device was administered and the driver obtained a reading in the “Warn” range and was issued a seven day driver’s licence suspension as a result of a second offence.

At about 10:00 a.m. on Sat., Aug. 3, 2019, OPP received a traffic complaint of a possible impaired driver on MacSteven Drive in Picton.  Officers located the vehicle at Spencer St. and Picton Main St.  As a result of the investigation, the male driver was arrested and taken to Prince Edward OPP detachment for tests. Later on Aug. 3, shortly before 9:30 p.m. Prince Edward OPP officers responded to rollover collision on Loyalist Parkway, east of the village of Wellington, Ontario.

Both occupants were not injured and alcohol was involved. The male was taken from the scene to Quinte West OPP detachment for tests.

Paul Anthony Scott, 54, from Prince Edward County, ON and Matthew Alexandre McAnany, 25, from Guelph, ON have both been charged with the following offences in the separate incidents:Operation while Impaired (alcohol & drug) – Section 320.14 (1)(a) Criminal Code Operation while Impaired (80 plus) – Section 320.14 (1)(b) Criminal Code  Both accused were released and are scheduled to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice in Picton on Wed., Sept. 4, 2019. Both accused were also issued a 90 day Administrative Driver’s Licence Suspension and the vehicles were impounded for seven days.

“Impaired driving remains the leading cause of criminal death in Canada. OPP continue to rely on the general public to report crime and impaired driving is a crime that should be treated no differently.  If you suspect that someone is driving or about to drive impaired, call 9-1-1 and report it,” Community Safety and Media Relations Officer Karen German said.

On Aug., 3 officers responded to a report of vehicles being damaged at a local campground by an intoxicated male. At about 9:00 p.m. OPP officers went to a campground on County Road 18 in Athol ward in response to a report where a male had smashed a Dodge Charger and a Chrysler Town and Country van with a long steel pipe.

The male had smashed the windshields out of both vehicles and after striking the hood of the van, he swung the pipe at the owner of the vehicles.

Clinton Paul Green, 60, has been charged with one count of Assault – Section 266 Criminal Code and two counts of Mischief Under $5,000 Criminal Code. The accused was released from custody to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice on Wed., Aug. 28, 2019 in Picton. -Staf
