Jennifer Babin, 43, pleaded guilty to breaking and entering at the Ontario Court of Justice on King Street September 23. According to the facts of the case, Ms. Babin visited Wellington’s Lakeshore Farms Market on January 15, 2025 at 4 a.m. She broke in to the locked store through the front door, helped herself to groceries, and loaded her car with them before heading back for more.

A witness called the police. When they arrived, Ms. Babin was inside the store eating cake. Officers noted broken glass from a display case. Ms. Babin was arrested without incident. Defence lawyer Alexander Garrett noted addiction did play a role in the theft. According to Mr. Garrett, Ms. Babin thought she had taken cocaine, but had unknowingly taken fentanyl. 

Following a joint submission by the Crown and Garrett, Judge John Bonn sentenced Ms. Babin to a conditional discharge. She will be expected to attend a rehabilitation program, meet regularly with her probation officer, keep the peace and refrain from possessing a weapon. The programming she completes must deal with substance abuse.
