In response to your article in the June 1, 2023 edition of the Picton Gazette:
“BOQ MP says Terminals could be part of Green Transport Strategy”
Mr. Williams contends that transporting the Cathode Active Material (CAM) that will be produced at the Omicore plant north of Millhaven using Picton Terminals is the most environmentally friendly option when compared to road or rail. This simply is not true when you look at the numbers.
Distance | Impact | Total | ||
km | units/km | Impact | ||
Hamilton to St. Thomas (truck) | 140 | 20 | 2800
Millhaven to Picton (truck) | 65 | 20 | 1300
Picton to Hamilton (ship) | 280 | 1 | 280
4380 | ||||
Millhaven to St. Thomas (rail) | 430 | 4 | 1720
Even if the containers were moved by rail from Hamilton to St. Thomas (making the first option above rail, truck, ship), the rail-only option is still significantly better and much simpler. In any case, I suspect Omicore will select their shipping option based on more than just ghg emissions.
I find it shocking that a Member of Parliament would promote the interests of a company which has ignored both Provincial and Federal environmental orders and is currently before the court for defiance of County by-laws. I also point out that CAM is toxic. A spill would be a disaster for Picton’s water supply.
