The latest addition to Prince Edward County’s 46 km linear park  is in Consecon, at the foot of Salem Road. It features an accessible picnic table, sheltered bench, and a bicycle repair station. The rest area is also home to a garden kept by the County Garden Club.

PEC Trails Committee Chair Gregor Stuart noted ths stop is a testament to the dedication and perseverance of the “heart and soul” of the Millennium Trail, the late Barry Davidson. He was the driving force behind this  rest stop as well as the other rest area kiosks and installations along the trail. In fact, Mr. Davidson and Trails Committee volunteers did the bulk of the construction on the project, designed by former County Councillor Ernie Margetson.

“The benches, the picnic table and the kiosk were all hand built by Barry and his build team volunteers,” Trails Committee member Pat Maloney noted. The bulk of the cost of construction materials was covered by a generous donation from Bev and Don Skidmore.

Salem Road makes for four rest areas on the Trail, including Station Road in Hillier, another in Wellington, and the White Chapel Road stop at County Road 49 in Picton.

In addition to covered benches, picnic tables and repair stations, all rest stops offer historical displays concerning the immediate area. The Salem Road stop offers a look at the history of the village of Consecon and Wellers Bay.

The Trail Committee continues to work with the County on two remaining sites identified as potential rest stops, in the village of Bloomfield and in Picton, at the Agrarian Market.
