You need to be careful with discounts. Sometimes the discounted item is cheaper at regular price somewhere else. Shop around a make your purchases carefully.

Senior’s discounts are not always openly advertised. It is recommended that you ask about whether or not the store offers the discount every time you make a purchase. These are a few seniors discounts that I’ve found. Not all stores in a chain offer the same discount, however, so you’ll need to check when you’re at the store. Shoppers Drug Mart offers a discount on the last Thursday of every month.

Shoppers Drug Mart offers 20 per cent off for customers 65 and older (some locations age 55), if you have an Optimum card. Some Shoppers offer it every Thursday.

Rexall PharmaPlus offers 20 per cent off on senior’s day. The day varies. Pharmasave often will offer 10 per cent off in one day (location may vary). Arby’s has a 10 per cent discount at participating locations for ages 55+. M&M Meats offers a 5 per cent discount if you are 60+ and in some stores the discount increases to 10 per cent if you spend over $30. Bulk Barn has a 10 per cent senior’s discount every Wednesday. Taco Bell has free drinks for seniors at participating locations. Wendy’s will give seniors a free drink at some locations (ages 55+). Subway has 10 per cent off for those 60+. McDonald’s offers discounted senior coffee at participating locations. Burger King also has a seniors coffee and the location may vary so be sure to check. KFC gives a free small drink with any meal for those 55+. Check with the location. Parks Canada Pass offers a discount on a yearly pass to the National Parks or historic sites and people age 65+ are eligible. Via Rail offers 10 per cent off to anyone 60+.

Also, be sure to check with your bank and any hotel you’re making a reservation with. Thrift Shop – half-price sale on clothing, shoes and boots on now good used clothing and shoes for the whole family is on sale at Community Care’s Thrift Shop, 153 Main Street in Picton.

Lunch and Learn for Seniors – Sept. 11th, Picton Town Hall Come on out and enjoy great food and conversation with old and new friends and learn something new, too on Wed., Sept. 11th at 12 p.m. The cost is $10.00 per person. The learning portion will feature a presentation by Marilyn MacDonald, retired teacher, on changes in teaching over the years. The Prince Edward County Library will provide information on education. This event is sponsored by The Prince Edward County Community Care for Seniors Association and will be held in the Picton Town Hall. There is an elevator for those who need it.
