Seniors’ Active Living Fairs are held in many parts of Ontario with the support of the Ministry for Seniors & Accessibility. There are often up to 100 such events annually. These fairs help to connect seniors and caregivers with others in their community. The fairs help seniors learn about key issues that affect their health and well-being.
In 2018, the County Seniors Centre offered its first Active Living Fair. It was held in Wellington in November and was attended by over 400. We had another successful event in the fall of 2019 and I don’t have to tell you what happened in the year 2020. The pandemic derailed lots of in-person events and this was one of them. In 2020, 2021, and 2022 the local fair was held online over a period of months. Not nearly as effective as meeting in real life. In 2023 we went back to the Community Centre in Wellington and had another wildly successful fair.
The Seventh Annual Seniors’ Information and Active Living Fair in PEC will be held on Thursday, November 14th at the Wellington & District Community Centre. Mark your calendar now so you don’t miss it! This free event is designed to promote active healthy living, social engagement, partnerships, independence, and learning, as well as reduce social isolation for seniors, families, and caregivers.
There are over 50 “vendors” from the community showcasing the services they offer, as well as presentations and demonstrations. There’s a free lunch and coffee/tea/water and snacks. Entry is free, parking is free, and there are even door prizes – you can enter the draw for free!
The presentation schedule is still being confirmed. So far, it includes presentations by our Event Sponsor Gordon’s Downsizing and Estate Services; the Canada Revenue Agency; the Ministry of Transportation talking about licence renewal for those over 80; The County Foundation; Service Canada will talk about the Canada Dental Plan; Brighton Retirement Living; the County Ukelele Band; the PEC OPP Detachment; the Prince Edward Family Health Team; and more.
Hastings & Prince Edward Public Health is holding a vaccination clinic on site (no appointment required). There’ll be a fire truck, ambulance and County Transit bus on site to view. We recommend that you plan to attend for the full day so you don’t miss anything!
It all gets underway at 10:00am with opening remarks by Mayor Steve Ferguson and our newly elected MPP Tyler Allsopp. Minister of Seniors and Accessibilty Raymond Cho will also attend and participate in the grand opening.
Vendors, presentations, entertainment and activities run to 3 p.m. All are welcome! Call the Community Care office for more information at 613-476-7493. As soon as the presentation schedule is confirmed, you can find it on the website.
