The PEC Chamber of Commerce has supported small businesses in Prince Edward County for almost 120 years and fully understands and supports Mr. Arthur’s call to shop local to remain “County Strong.” (Op-Ed, July 24)
Mr. Arthur’s comments align perfectly with our ongoing efforts to support local businesses and strengthen our community’s economic backbone. 98 percent of all businesses in the County are small businesses.
The decision to shop locally is more than a slogan or hashtag; it’s a strategic action that significantly impacts our local economy. By choosing to shop local, you support the community in which you live, you support job creation and help sustain the livelihoods of your friends, family and neighbours. Shopping locally also contributes to environmental sustainability and a greener, healthier Prince Edward County.
The economic environment for small businesses in PEC is a difficult one with lower tourist numbers, lingering supply chain issues, higher interest rates, inflation and reduced consumer spending, yet we continue to see the entrepreneurial spirt of PEC residents thriving and investing in our community and its people despite these challenges.
From businesses expanding their products and services, opening new locations, investing in capital projects to first-time entrepreneurs identifying a gap or niche market and taking a risk, small businesses are foundational to being able to live, work and thrive in PEC. From Consecon to Picton and everywhere in between, the willingness to take risks on the future of the County is evident. While the benefits of shopping local are clear, we recognize the challenges residents might face, such as potentially higher costs and less variety. It’s here that initiatives like local farmer and artisan markets, special business district events, and the Chamber’s own promotional campaigns like Shop County, come into play. These are designed to offer competitive pricing and showcase the wide variety of goods available right here at home.
There is strength in numbers, and we are here to support our 290 business members that live, work and support our community — but we know that with your help, we can do more. We’re here to listen to the needs of small businesses and hear from them directly about the supports and services they require in 2024 and beyond.
This is our call to action. We encourage all residents to continue supporting local businesses. Whether it’s frequenting a local café, buying from local farmers’ markets, or choosing local artisans for gifts. Skip the mall/big box stores and check out local book stores and clothing shops. Each small purchasing decision adds up. We also urge local businesses to advertise locally, in local print and radio, and to engage with the Chamber for support in marketing, training, and networking opportunities.
Together, let’s commit to shopping local, ensuring that our businesses and community thrive, thereby ensuring a vibrant future for all of Prince Edward County.
