The unofficial end of summer was marked at Base31 Saturday night with a sold out appearance by Canadian pop rockers Marianas Trench.
With a pair of double platinum albums to their credit and a penchant for showmanship and audience engagement, the quartet from Vancouver delivered an explosive and interactive show to a packed Drill Hall filled to the limit with appreciative County concert goers.
Marianas are in the midst of the Force of Nature tour in support of their sixth studio album Haven.
The group kicked off their 20 song set with “A Normal Life,” the perfect opener to showcase lead singer Josh Ramsay’s dynamic vocal range and Marianas’s ability to slip between glam and pop rock.
Catchy pop hits “Rhythm of Your Heart” and “Desperate Measures” followed the opener and launched attendees into a frenzy they likely still haven’t recovered from.
In the middle of the set, the staff at Prince Edward County Memorial Hospital earned a shout out for their treatment of bat bite victim and guitarist Matt Webb who came all the way to the County and earned a rabies shot for his troubles.
Following a pounding performance of paint-by-numbers “Pop 101,” rumours Mr. Ramsey would enter the crowd and perform alongside leather-lunged fanatics materialized. All it took was a spotlight to illuminate the lead singer and the familiar lyric “Testing, Testing…” at the rear of the hall to set off a cacophony of inspired voices that belted out “Haven’t Had Enough.”
Marinas closed with “Good To You,” “Stutter” and “Fall Out” and revelled in a minutes-long ovation.
Toronto-based singer-songwriter Nicolina of American Idol fame opened Saturday’s concert.
After a run of sold out Canadian dates in Vancouver, Winnipeg, Toronto and Picton this summer, Juno award winning Marianas Trench finishes up their circuit with 21 dates in the United States over the next six weeks.
