Robert Caputo, of Compass Greenfield Developments, gave a deputation to the Committee of the Whole earlier this month, seeking support for an agrivoltaics development in Prince Edward County.
Normally, solar projects are not permitted on prime agricultural land. But agrivoltaics combines two land uses, agriculture and solar energy, on one plot of land.
The development is a proposed sheep farm that explores crop production on a 105-acre property on Elmbrook Drive, under lease to Compass Greenfield.
Ontario is projected to have a 75 percent increase in energy demand over the next 25 years. Compass Greenfield currently has 50 megawatts of solar and battery storage across Ontario and Saskatchewan, with an additional 500 mw in development.
The Elmbrook development is in stage one of their community engagement plan. Following community engagement, Indigenous consultation, and permitting, the current timeline slates construction in 2027.
Compass Greenfield is seeking municipal support to follow through to the next phase of planning. Council referred the request to staff for a report.
