DEK Prince Edward OPP have charged a senior elementary teacher at St. Greg’s Catholic School in Picton with sexual crimes against a young person.
The OPP announced March 23 that Belleville resident Kaitlin Farrell, 32, had been charged in a child luring investigation.
Ms. Farrell has been charged with sexual assault; sexual interference; luring by means of telecommunication; and invitation to sexual touching of a person under 16.
Additional charges include supplying vapour product to a minor under the Smoke Free Ontario Act.
Ms. Farrell was released from custody and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Picton.
A notation detailing the charges was posted to Kaitlin Victoria Farrell’s profile page at the Ontario College of Teachers (OCT) on March 25.
In all cases where an OCT member is subject to criminal proceedings relevant to their eligibility to teach, a notation detailing the charges is added to their profile on the public register once official court documents are obtained.
OCT Senior Communications officer Elena Moreno told the Gazette that following an investigation by College staff, its Investigation Committee may determine that a matter should be referred to the Discipline Committee.
“If the case is referred for a discipline hearing, that information is posted on the member’s public register profile,” she said. “A Notice of Hearing setting out allegations of professional misconduct against the member involved is also added to their profile once it has been prepared. Then a date for a Discipline Committee hearing is set.”
Algonquin and Lakeshore Catholic District School Board spokesperson Jessica Salmon said the Board declined to comment on personnel matters.
A parent of a child in senior elementary at St. Greg’s confirmed to the Gazette Ms. Farrell is no longer teaching at the school.
