Each week, the Gazette looks back on stories from the past. Here is what happened this week, by year…

1910

• Hillier – The last of our Northwest visitors, in the person of Mrs. Osborne, left last week for her home. Her mother, Mrs. James Jones, accompanied her as far as Toronto.

• Wellington – Mr. A. C. Lindsay has gone to his home, Lethbridge, Alta., after a visit at Mr. G. Baillie’s.

• The Steamer Salaberry, former the property of the Lehigh Portland Cement Company, which has been undergoing repairs during the winter at Deseronto, and recently purchased by Capt. Collier and Company of Picton, will go into commission just as soon as navigation opens.

• Messrs. Archie Church and Nelson Hudgin left for Perry Sound to work on the steamer G. S. Lampton, for the summer season.

1940

• Scoharie – Mrs. John Thompson returned to her home in Picton on Tuesday after spending the past three weeks with her daughter, Mrs. Mildred Benson.

• Scoharie – Mr. Homer Walters spent a couple of days this week with Mr. and Mrs. G. Douglas Tayler, Wellington Road.

• Wellington – Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Stringer, Beverly and Dale, Mr. and Mrs. C. Shortt, all of Toronto, and Mr. and Mrs. F. Thompson and Lois of Hillier were Easter guests of Mr. and Mrs. W. F. Thompson.

• Wellington – Mr. and Mrs. George Hubbard and Lois Goodmurphy were supper guests of Mr. and Mrs. Dick Hubbard.

• Local athlete of note Donald Wannamaker of Pictonhas been accepted to join the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and is now at their training school in Regina. Wannamaker was Picton Collegiate’s best all around athlete in 1935 and helped save to people at Outlet Creek as a young lad.
• Lt. Col. Sherman Young of the Hastings & Prince Edward Regiment returned from England and told the Gazette of his expereinces so far.

1970

• Despite a valiant effort, Carl Stacey and the Picton Merchants Intermediate Hockey team dropped an 8-6 decision against a group of touring NHL alums at the Picton Arena. Among the ex NHLers taking to the ice in Picton were Pete Conacher, Cal Gardiner and Wally Stankowski.

• The icebreaker Simcoe has come into Picton Bay, making a path past Lake Ontario Cement to the Bethlehem Steel docks. The shipping season in running a week or two behind as a late and heavy snow in March insulated the ice in the bay, halting the melting rays of the sun.

• South Bay – The C.G.I.T. held their annual tea in the Sunday school hall on Wednesday afternoon.

• Demorestville – The card party sponsored by the W.I. was well attended last Friday evening with 17 tables in play.

• South Bay – A very impressive service was held by Rev. W. Neelands when he received 20 young people as members of the church and they received Holy Communion.

1980

• Drug use in Prince Edward and Hastings Counties is rapidly increasing, in three months this year there have been 62 arrests compared to a total of 102 last year. RCMP Constable Jim Grimshaw gave the information in a talk to parents of the County Drug Awareness Group Tuesday night at CML Snider Elementary School, Wellington. Constable Grimshaw said most of the offenders were teenagers but adult users were included.

• The Picton Oddfellow and Rebekah Atoms journeyed to Ernestown three times on the weekend to participate in the annual atom tournament.
