Each week, the Gazette looks back on stories from the past. Here is what happened this week, by year…

1909:

• The old boys have gone. After three days of wide open Prince Edward hospitality the annual visitation is over. The excursion returned to Toronto last evening. When the train left Trenton to come into Prince Edward there were on board 340 home-comers.
• Holiday makers deserted Picton yesterday. It was Civic holiday, and the town was closed up tight. The day from early dawn was ideal August weather, clear and bright.
• Petty thieving is reported from Mary Street this week. The other night 13 chickens that had reached broiler stage were stolen from Mr. Edward Boulter.

1939:

• The province of Ontario is engaged in a vast tree planting campaign, under which 160,000,000 baby trees have been distributed by the forestry branch of the Ontario Government for planting.
• At Tuesday night’s meeting of Picton Town Council, Administrator L.B. Brown presented the usual monthly report as to Unemployment Relief recording a total expenditure for July of $470.64, comparing with $428.02 in the same month of 1938
• The annual Veterans’ Picnic was held on Wednesday, Aug.9^th at the Sandbanks with around 100 men, women and children gathered to enjoy themselves and enjoy a day of swimming, games and good times.

1969:

• A tea and fashion show will be held on the lawn of Warden and Mrs. George Foster, Wednesday, August 6^th, 2 to 4 p.m. In the form of a “come as you are tea”.
• Mr. J. Donald Baxter, president of the Baxter Canning Co., Ltd., Bloomfield, describes the pea yield this year as “exceptional”.
• Two Rochester men, Mike Krochina and Jim Dougherty, landed safely near Wellington Saturday evening after a 21-hour kayak trip across Lake Ontario. The two paddlers endured two rainstorms and travelled by compass.

1979:

• Wednesday, Aug. 8 at Benson Park the Picton Recreation and Parks will be holding its annual penny carnival. All of the town’s seven parks will gather together at 6:30 p.m.
• An energetic unsolicited proposal to revitalize Picton’s Main St. under guidance of the Business Improvement Area (BIA) organization Tuesday evening won hearty support of a bare quorum of the businessmen’s group.
• Picton OPP detachment dealt with seven minor accidents on the Civic Holiday weekend including an instance where a horse ran in front of a car near County Rd. 10. The animal survived with cuts and scrapes.
