Each week, the Gazette looks back on stories from the past. Here is what happened this week, by year…

1910

• “Buck” Irving, the promoter of professional hockey in this district, and Secretary of the Eastern Ontario Professional League was in town last week making arrangements for the Picton team.
• The “Song Recital” given by Miss Christine Barker at “Old Grange” last Saturday afternoon proved a delightful musical afternoon. Quite a number of music lovers gathered at Miss Barker’s home for the twilight recital.
• This is what the Globe of Nov.29th. says of this production which comes to the Bijou Opera house here. “If the performance of “The White Squaw,” at the Grand Opera House during the remaining days of this week measure up to the initial presentation, given last evening, there will be few vacant seats Miss Della Clarke received a most hearty reception.

1940

• With one of the guards at Picton Bombing and Gunnery School having a mild case of smallpox, about thirty-five men have been quarantined. They are billeted in the guard-house. The man had been vaccinated, but is believed to have contacted the disease while on leave in Toronto.
• Snow plows yesterday resumed operations in an attempt to open county roads which were blocked by Wednesday’s blizzard.
• Several hundred students arrived at Picton Bombing and Gunnery School Monday night. Arriving by train about midnight, the men were conveyed to the training centre in trucks, attracting attention by their hearty singing.

1970

• The first group of mentally retarded patients is scheduled to move into the former Camp Picton early in January Donald E. Zarfas, director of the Mental Retardation Branch on the Mental Health Division, Ontario Department of Health, told a special meeting of the Rotary Club Tuesday.
• The Parish Hall of St. Andrew’s Anglican Church, Wellington, was a very busy place Saturday afternoon when the A.C.W. held their annual Christmas Tea and Bazaar. The Hall and tea tables were tastefully decorated for the occasion.
• More than 230,000 elderly people across Ontario have begun to receive special assistance from the Ontario Government to lighten their property tax burden. Municipal Affairs Minister Darcy McKeough said the 1970 Tax Assistance for the Elderly represents “a major initiative  in relieving tax pressures confronting a particularly hard-pressed sector on the population.”

1980

• Ontario Hydro has been given permission from Ameliasburgh Township to dump oil-soaked soil from a storm sewer ditch near its Belleville Office in the township dump. But it will cost Hydro $100 per load.
• In recognition of his 25 years of service to the Prince Edward Horticultural Society and to the community, Phil Dodds was honored at the annual banquet of the society when he was presented with a life membership in acknowledgement of long and valuable services. 
• Picton Hicks Lumber Midgets continued their winning brand of play over the weekend, picking up a 6 to 2 victory over Trenton on exhibition play Saturday evening on the road, then adding their 10th straight win in Quinte St. Lawrence League play defeating Belleville 8 to 2 Sunday night at home.
