Each week, the Gazette looks back on stories from the past. Here is what happened this week, by year…

1910

• Between one hundred and one hundred and twenty-five men and women, mostly women, assembled at the store of Mr. D. P. Boles to witness the unveiling of the clock in his show window.
• The regular meeting of the Milford branch of the Women’s Institute was held at the home of Mrs. Hamilton Welbanks. The meeting opened with singing, the minutes read and approved of and then the general business and roll call.
• A very sad accident occurred at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. John Jickles in the township of Hallowell when their little two-year-old daughter fell in a cistern and drowned.embers 

1940 

• Non-permanent active militia, with permanent officers, will be mobilized with the recruiting of the 2nd Battalion, Hastings and Prince Edward Regiment and the Argyll Light Infantry (Tanks), it was announced from Military Headquarters No. 3, Kingston.
• The East Lake W.A. put on a very enjoyable strawberry and ice-cream social at the home of Mrs. Urban Cooper.
• The annual regatta dance in the armoires was marked by a very large attendance. over one hundred couples danced merrily to the splendid music furnished by Jimmie Rennie and his ten artists from Kingston.

1970

• Members of the Boot and Shoe Workers’ Union are dissatisfied with local shoe stores which are selling imported shoes. They plan to picket stores selling imported shoes in Picton, Belleville, Brighton, Madoc and Napanee on July 4.
• The monthly report of County Road Engineer Don Clark as of June 19 was presented at the county council meeting last week.
• Susan Broadbridge, a student at Sophiasburgh Central School has received a letter of thanks from Betty Kennedy, well-known Canadian broadcaster, for a donation made by her Grade 3 class to “Project Schoolhouse”.

1980

• The Bloomfield-Hallowell Fire Department answered a call to extinguish a fire in the back section of the house belonging to John Otter of RR1, Bloomfield (Scoharie Road). An estimated $8,000 in damage.
• The doors of the new Hillier Township Fire Hall will swing open to the public and everyone is invited to take part in an afternoon of displays and demonstrations.
• This summer Elaine York and Tracy Rosborough will have their work cut out for them trying to get residents of Sophiasburgh interested in the recreational programs.
