Each week, the Gazette looks back on stories from the past. Here is what happened this week, by year…
1923
- The residence of Mr. F. E. Leavitt, Mary Street West, was badly damaged by a fire. The fire started in the back part of the house and the interior of the kitchen and woodshed was all ablaze before it was discovered. The fire department responded within a few minutes but the house and contents were badly damaged by the fire, water an smoke. Mr. W. H. Williamson had insurance and a settlement was made for the sum of $3500 for damages.
- At the Town Council’s regular meeting, it was decided to repair the Market Building. A resolution was passed authorizing the property committee to put on a new roof and make other repairs as needed.
1943
- Mount Pleasant Aid held its May meeting at the home of Misses Smith with 15 present. Mrs. Knight was elected to attend a conference on the 27th in Belleville as a delegate.
- Coupons for the purchase of sugar for canning purposes are now being mailed from the local Ration Board, County Buildings. The Ration Administration has allocated canning sugar to visitors from the United States whose stay in Canada this year will be longer than eight weeks. Under no circumstances, however, will such sugar be made available to summer visitors or tourists whose stay in this country is of shorter duration.
1973
- A letter of congratulations and a silver pin reading NDP was presented to Ann Farwell by president of the local riding association, Harvey Gottfried on behalf of provincial party head Stephen Lewis at a recent meeting of the Prince Edward sector of the political group. This was given in recognition of Miss Farwell signing 25 new party members.
- The Prince Edward County Nurses Association held their last meeting of the year at the home of Miss Gladys Lehigh, Paul Street. The business included the finalizing of the Bursary giving. The guidance counsellor at the high school has not provided the Auxiliary with a list of names to choose from, so the bursary committee and the executive will decide on the selected pupil.
1983
- Faye Roblin set another record in the javelin, this time at the Eastern Ontario finals in Oshawa, to lead three Prince Edward Collegiate Institute track and field athletes to the All Ontario finals in Kitchener. Miss Roblin won first place in the event with a toss of 45.24 meters. She also advanced in two other events after scoring a fifth place in the discus and second place in the shot.
- The deep concern of the people of Prince Edward County with the increasing incidence of cancer was evident in the phenomenal response to the annual response to the annual campaign against cancer. Despite difficult economic times, the community dug deeper into its pockets. Once again, surpassing their set target of $22,000. The final total received was $23,405.63.
