Each week, the Gazette looks back on stories from the past. Here is what happened this week, by year…
1923
- Wellington Juniors defeat Picton in baseball 9-5. Webster and Haight, pitcher and catcher, respectively, for Wellington by their splendid playing, did much to pile up the score in favour of their team.
- The schooner W. J. Jamieson of Picton sank while returning from Oswego with a load of coal for Hyatt and Hart. The crew are all safe in Picton but the vessel with her cargo is a total loss.
- At the Liberal meeting held in the Town Hall, Picton, a recognition of both the women’s section and the men’s section of the Liberal party took place. The officers of the women’s sections of whom Mrs. Wood is the president, were re-elected with the exception of Miss. Graves who declined the position which was filled by Mrs. Vincent Roblin.
1943
- A freak egg is reported by Fred Vancott, Mary Street. One of his ducks laid an egg which when broken open revealed another egg inside. The outer egg was unusually large with a soft shell, while the inner egg was small with a hard shell.
- Plans are being made for a wolf hunt in the vicinity of Point Traverse where one has been seen several times. Many sheep are kept in that district and it’s feared the wolf may attack the flocks which now include lambs.
- At the Victory Loan Rally in the Regent Theatre, a silver collection will be taken. All money will be used to purchase cigarettes to be sent to local men overseas. One dollar will send 300 cigarettes.
1973
- National Hospital Day May 12- Administrator urges support. As the population grows and the needs of care grow, hospitals are changing, developing, moving into different types of health care, improving procedures, all with one objective — to give the best level of hospital care for the dollars available.
- A very important meeting for all Group II (industrial) milk producers will be held in the Baxter Hall, Bloomfield. Two important questions must face all can shippers today. (a) How long can you continue to ship your milk in cans and how much will it cost? (b) Should you build a milk house and go bulk?
- West Bloomfield Report: Mr. and Mrs. Walter Fox and Mr. And Mrs. John Matthie enjoyed Sunday dinner with Mr. and Mrs. Elmer McFaul. Mrs. Clifford McFaul was a guest also. Mrs. Herb Knight and Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Wight and Sherry were recent supper guests with Mr. And Mrs. Kevin Wight and Tammy.
1983
- An undercover drug investigation by the OPP resulted in the arrest of 52 people, four from the Picton area. Undercover officers purchased quantities of LSD, cocaine, hashish, hashish oil and marijuana, resulting in 78 charges of trafficking.
- Doubt over Picton’s ability to found a parks storage building has probably been eliminated due to an announcement that Natural Resources Minister Alan Pope has recommended approval of a $25,000 grant. MPP James Taylor said the Parks Assistance grant was sought to purchase additional land for Picton Creek Park, construct a parks building, washrooms and make other improvements.
- A total of 37 track and field athletes from high school represent Prince Edward County at the Bay of Quinte meet in Trenton. Although only a few of Prince Edward Collegiate Institute’s track and field athletes have been running away with the top places in their respective events, a large number of their fellow teammates have also qualified for the Bay of Quinte finals this week.
