Each week, the Gazette looks back on stories from the past. Here is what happened this week, by year…

1910

• While returning home from the 24th of May celebration by C. O. R. train, Wm. H. Bull of Hillier, was the victim of a very painful accident. On reaching Wellington Mr. Bull got off the train and attempted to get on again while the train was leaving, missed his footing and fell underneath the train where his arm was crushed so badly it had to be taken off.
• Mr. David McAuley, Centre street, sold to Mr. Terry O’Neil of Montreal a four-year-old colt by Sam Medium, for $600.00
• If there is one person more than another who delights in promoting every kind of manly sport, that person is ex-Mayor, Wellington Boulter. He has just presented to the Picton Yacht Club three handsome cups for competition at their regatta this summer.

1940

• Those who did not attend the musical concert given at Wellington United Church missed a great musical treat. Promptly at 8:30 p.m. the performing artists and choir took their places.
• At a meeting of men from Picton and district which filled the dining room of the Globe Hotel, Thursday night, the Junior Board of Trade was renamed Prince Edward Chamber of Commerce. The new name follows the style of many other Chambers of Commerce in Ontario towns and cities.
• At Mrs. H. D. Williams’ home, the Bloomfield W.M.S. held their May meeting with an attendance of 16. Meeting was opened with a hymn, prayer by Mrs. Williams. The president read a letter regarding the sectional rally.

1970

• 2nd Picton Cubs and Scouts Mothers Auxiliary meeting was held Monday with eight members present. Business discussed was a Rummage and Bake Sale which was a very successful day on Saturday.
• With two albums to his credit and another on its way, Gord Grills and his “Road Rangers” of the Whitby-Ajax area entertained an audience of country and western music fans for the second time this year at the Regent Theatre stage.
• A cheque for $1,200, proceeds from the Belleville Shrine Club’s Pee Wee Hockey Tournament, was officially turned over at the club’s annual father and son banquet last week. The money goes towards the Shrine’s work for crippled children.

1980

• Milford Men’s Softball Team came through three game win, starting Tuesday night off with a 7-5 win against the Juveniles. Mel Murphy pitched to the 5th inning and Mark McAlpine to the 7th giving the mound back to Murphy who pitched to the last two batter in the 7th inning.
• Formation of a union at the Wellington Mushroom Farm has been blocked because mushrooms are classed as agricultural produce and the plant which has about 160 workers cannot be certified for union purposes. 
• Only two public buildings toured by the Public Institutions Inspection Panel on May 26 and 27 got a clean bill of health – they were the registry office which was found to be “in excellent condition” and the Ontario Provincial Police Station declared “satisfactory.”
