Each week, the Gazette looks back on stories from the past. Here is what happened this week, by year…

1910

• A great many farmers loose large sums of money every year on their apples, by selling too quickly , or accepting any price that is offered them. They should study the markets themselves, and put a price on their apples that the quality and market demands.
• The residence of Mrs. M. Champside, Maple avenue, Wellington, was the scene of a very happy and pleasant social event. It was Mrs. Champside’s 70th birthday, and her children all assembled to spend the day with their beloved mother. 
• Mr N. E. Irving, of Trenton, was in town on Friday last arranging for Picton to enter the Professional hockey League Association for Eastern Ontario. Satisfactory arrangements, it is said, were made with the rink management for the use of the rink.

1940

• Bruce Martin of the Outlet, 11 miles from Picton, is interested in the proposed search for a barrel of gold supposed to have been buried in the vicinity in 1758 by French soldiers. He owns a large section of heavily-wooded land along the river on which many Indian relics have been found.
• A truck driver saved the life of Orville Richardson of West Lake Saturday night when he pulled him from his burning automobile. Richardson’s car left the Belleville highway near Mount Pleasant, knocked over two mail boxes, crashed into a tree and took fire. Mr. Richardson 61, sole occupant of the car, was unconscious in the blazing machine when the driver of a Modern Cleaners truck pulled him from the wreckage. It is believed Richardson suffered a heart seizure at the time.

1970

• At the meeting of Sir Thomas Picton Chapter IODE, Mrs. H. Pyne for services at Home and Abroad, displayed many knitted garments which will be sent to headquarters for Overseas Relief. She said good used clothing will also be accepted from members for shipment. Reporting World Affairs, Mrs. Hornsby chose as her topic, Youth and Education.
• The Township of Sophiasburgh has arranged for temporary firs protection until December 31, pending results of a plebiscite to be held in conjunction with the municipal elections on December 7.
• A new canning line at Baxter’s in Bloomfield, blueberries, is not creating any additional employment this year, but has possibilities for expansion in the future, according the Manager Don Baxter. 

1980

• Mrs. Arthur Guernsey and Mrs. Hilton Wood were hostesses to Cherry Valley Women’s Institute Tuesday afternoon in Mrs. Guernsey’s home. There was a good turnout of members and guests. The meeting was conducted by President Mrs. Rudolph DaSilva. 
• Picton Ontario Provincial Police are investigating the theft of over $1,000 worth of property from the Rednersville Road home of Patricia McDougall. Entrance was gained through an unlocked door sometime between 8 and 11 p.m. Wednesday. Stolen was a stereo receiver and speakers, an engraved gold watch and chain along with other jewelry.
• They say you can’t win ‘em all, but young Jay Pierson certainly appeared to come close Friday evening picking up an impressive armful of trophies as one of the top participants honored at the 8th annual Prince Edward County 4-H Club Awards Night.
