Each week, the Gazette looks back on stories from the past. Here is what happened this week, by year…

1910

• The 55th annual exhibition of the Ameliasburgh Agricultural Society was held on Saturday at Roblin’s Mills under very favourable circumstances. The weather being fine, attracted many to this popular annual affair, as it would be difficult to witness a better agricultural exhibition than the one above mentioned.
• A little spaniel dog, belonging to Mrs. S. J. Collier, at the Pictonia, was poisoned on Monday night. This makes the sixth dog Mrs. Collier has had poisoned during her two and a half years she has been mistress of the Pictonia, and it would seem it is designed by someone in that neighbourhood, she can not have a pet dog.
• On Friday afternoon Messrs. Walter Hobson and Percy Love, who are attending the Collegiate Institute here, took a dash through the country in record time. The pair ran eight miles in 55 minutes.

1940

• The Picton War Emergency Committee is asking the public to save wrappers for which a cash allowance is made by the Proctor & Gamble Co. Half a cent is given for each Camay soap wrapper or pound tin Crisco label, one cent for each Chipso box top, two cents for each label from a 3-lb tin of Crisco.
• Fire completely destroyed Picton Manor early yesterday morning, with occupants fleeing into the cold night air clad only in night clothing. Not a single item of the contents of the beautifully furnished Manor, or personal belonging of the guests, were saved.
• Back from the rigours of defence warfare, Pte. Sheldon Calver of the Hastings and Prince Edward Regiment is the first soldier to return to Napanee following active service overseas. He was among a party of Canadian soldiers invalidated home.

1970

• The resignation of Jack Purtelle, President of the Prince Edward Chamber of Commerce caused a shakeup in the Chamber’s board of directors at the regular meeting Monday. Mr. Purtelle noted in his letter he feels deep regret at leaving the office, but was forced to resign because of business pressures.
• Prince Edward County is drawing much interest by student groups for study purposes lately. This week, a group of 26 students and two teachers from St. George’s School of Montreal are in the county doing studies in agriculture and farm product processing, along with ecology and other related geography.
• The first annual Snowmobile Show, sponsored by the Prince Edward Chamber of Commerce over the weekend, was an overwhelming success, chairman Archie Kingma reported to the Chamber’s board of directors Monday.

1980

• Through wind, rain and hail, yes definitely hail, some as round as dimes and a quarter-inch thick, 64 golfers participated in the Picton Golf and Country Club’s Men’s closing tournament last Saturday.
• Ross Cronkwright has announced he will seek the post of Deputy Reeve in the upcoming municipal election. Mr. Cronkwright is a former Reeve, Deputy Reeve and Councillor.
• Sunday, saw the “gathering of the Clan” of Mrs. Margaret Wilkinson who resides at 25 Queen St. Picton. The occasion was the advanced celebration of her 100th birthday. She has resided in Picton since emigrating with her husband, Tom, and family from Northern Ireland back in July 1928.
