The Athol South Marysburgh Public School Eagles are soaring again!
Fresh off their Hastings and Prince Edward District School Board regional soccer title this fall, the Eagles showed their proficiency on the volleyball court at Eastside Secondary School in Belleville last week, earning their second district title this school year.
And unlike on the soccer pitch where the Eagles led wire-to-wire, the squad needed to overcome an early setback to capture their crown. Coach Andrew White said the Eagles squad attacked the net and played offensive volleyball. The collection of athletes have developed as a cohesive unit from their early days in the junior ranks.
“I am very proud to be coaching these students,” Mr. White told the Gazette.
After a tough opening loss to Foxboro Public School Foxes(14–25, 23–25), the Eagles came back with dominant wins over Trenton (25–15, 25–15), Stirling Public School (25–7, 25–11), and the Harry J Clarke Hawks (25–18, 25–8).
In the semifinals, the Eagles bested Stirling 25–17 and 25–20, securing their spot in the final.
Facing the Foxes with a title and redemption on the line, the Eagles proved unstoppable. Athol-South Marysburgh defeated Foxboro 25–17 and 25–13 to claim gold and add another banner to the wall at the school’s gymnasium.
“I am so proud of these students and this District championship,” Athol South Marysburgh Public School Principal Heather McMaster added. “I love how their hard work and teamwork is inspiring the other students in our school to try their best as well.”
Congratulations Eagles!
