Community Safety Officer Constable Patrick Menard reports the Prince Edward Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police had a slightly quieter week this past week after dealing with over 300 calls for service in the days following the Civic Holliday.

In total, Prince Edward OPP officers responded to 213 reported incidents between Aug. 13-19. Below are some examples of calls that kept officers busy:

August 13

•The light posts outside a King Street address in Picton were damaged sometime during the previous evening. No witnesses or suspects have been identified and the incident has been forwarded to the Frontline Support Unit for follow up.

• Police responded to a single vehicle collision on Main Street in Wellington. There were no injuries in the crash however there was damage to both a building and the vehicle.

• Prince Edward OPP officers conducted a wellbeing check on a 80-year-old Consecon female who had not contacted her friends in a few weeks. The check was completed and the female was found in good health.

• While at a RIDE initiative on Loyalist Parkway, an officer checked 78 vehicles which resulted in two Highway Traffic Act warnings, a single HTA charge and a 3 day licence suspension for a female driver who registered an “ALERT” on the roadside screening device.

  •A vehicle was demolished when it swerved to miss a deer and hit a rock face on a Prince Edward County road. The driver walked away from the crash with no injuries and the vehicle was removed by Shantz towing.

• Another motor vehicle collision involving a deer took place sometime around 9 p.m. when a vehicle travelling on County Road 1 struck the animal. There were no injuries to the driver.

August 14

• An Athol resident contacted Police to report ongoing issues with landlord. Prince Edward OPP reminds the public these are civil matters falling under the Landlord-Tennant Act. For more information on resolving landlord and tenant matters, please call 613-966-8686.

• A County Road 19 resident contacted police very upset after providing personal information to a CRA scam artist. Police are reminding the public to never give personal information over the phone and verify information before sending money to a bill collector. If in doubt, do not provide information over the telephone.

• A 42-year-old Picton woman was held by police until she sobered up after an altercation occurred and the individual would not leave a premises when asked. The female was removed from the location without incident.

• A very intoxicated male contacted Police to report his dog was lost in his yard and had possibly been stolen. The dog was eventually located and police were not required.

August 15

• A Wellington resident reported someone went through their vehicle, taking gift cards and change. There were no witnesses and Police are reminding the public to lock their vehicles at night

• A driver was charged under the HTA with failure to stop after a two vehicle collision on County Road 1. There were no injuries in the crash and both vehicles were towed by Shantz towing.

• Police report that tools were taken from the back of a truck while the owner was doing yard work on Main St. in Picton. There were no witnesses and currently no suspects. Anyone with information in regards to this matter are asked to call Crime Stoppers.

• Police responded to a suicidal person in Ameliasburgh. Police and EMS attended the scene and the individual voluntarily went by ambulance to Belleville General Hospital.

• Police were requested at Bayfield Treatment Home in Consecon for an altercation that occurred between staff and youth. Police attended and all parties were spoken to and the incident was confirmed accidental.

• A senior’s residence in Prince Edward County contacted police to report an assault between two elderly residents. The report was undertaken as per the home’s protocol. There were no injuries and no charges laid in the matter.

August 16

• A concerned citizen contacted police to report a dog left in a vehicle. The vehicle was gone when police arrived and Prince Edward OPP wish to remind everyone that leaving animals in vehicles, even for a short amount of time, can have catastrophic results.

• A Lock it or Lose it initiative was conducted on Picton’s Main Street with over 75 vehicles checked. A total of five vehicles were found unlocked and three of them had windows down. The public are reminded to lock their vehicles at night.

• A 70 year old South Marysburgh woman drove her vehicle into the ditch on County Road 13.  Police attended and the woman was arrested and charged with impaired operation of a vehicle section 253(1) of the Criminal Code of Canada.

August 17

• Around 9 a.m. Thursday morning police responded to a three vehicle collision at County Road 8 and 17 near Birdhouse City. A 53-year-old female was transported to Prince Edward County Memorial Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. As a result of the crash, a male was charged under the HTA and the vehicles were removed by Shantz towing.

• Prince Edward County Memorial Hospital staff contacted police to report a 89-year-old Male suffering from Alzheimer’s had left the Hospital The male was located and transported back to PECMH without incident.

• A youth was charged with assault with a weapon and held for a bail hearing after an altercation at a local treatment centre. The victim, a staff member at the treatment centre, received minor but life-threatening injuries.

• A 45-year-old man was spoken to after Prince Edward OPP were notified of a disturbance at a Picton bar. The man became belligerent after being refused alcohol when it was apparent he was intoxicated. The male returned to his residence without further incidents.

August 18

• Police assisted Sandbanks Provincial Park staff with Liquor Licence Act enforcement. A total of three Provincial Offence Notices were given along with three warnings.

• Stationary radar enforcement conducted on County Road 10 led to three Provincial Offence Notices and a warning being handed out.

• A 39-year-old Picton man was charged for impaired driving after police received a traffic complaint and the vehicle was located.

• A total of three non-criminal domestic related occurrences were investigated by police within a one hour timeframe. All parties were spoken to by police.

August 19

• A single vehicle collision occurred on Loyalist Parkway requiring the driver to attend PECMH with minor, non-life threatening injuries. No charges were laid.

• A female was located after being reported missing for several hours.The woman was located at Sandbanks Provincial Park and park wardens confirmed they made contact with the female.

During the week, Prince Edward OPP officers investigated 17 accidental 911 calls, 10 motor vehicle collisions and traffic related incidents. A total of eight RIDE programs were also conducted during this time period.
