Over the next few months the County of Prince Edward will be developing a pair of plans that will help shape a common vision for the future of transportation within the municipality.
A Transportation and a Cycling Master Plan that will be developed by retained firm WSG Limited is expected to be unveiled in December.
“Developing these two plans will help us arrive at common vision for the future of transportation within Prince Edward County,” said Mayor Steve Ferguson. “We want to ensure the transportation network of tomorrow enhances the quality of life for all residents and visitors.”
According to the municipal “Have Your Say” website, the Transportation Master Plan has three main goals:

1) Ensure the transportation network is accessible to all, regardless of age or physical abilities
2) Meet the goals and objectives of the County’s Community Development Strategic Plan and Official Plan;
3) Consider linkages to the County’s Asset Management Plan.
The Transportation Master Plan will reportedly follow the Municipal Class Environmental Assessment master planning process and will be developed in three phases. According to their website, the three phases can be broken down as such:
The Cycling Master Plan was conceived in 2019 with the aim to promote cycling as a viable transportation option throughout the County. The Cycling Master Plan will also provide a way to better connect trails with key destinations.
Both plans will be comprised of recommendations, including where and how transportation will be improved across the County. As well, they will provide policies to support improvements and address long-term community needs.
In addition, the plans will outline strategies to help the County determine how to build, fund, and promote transportation across the County.
The municipality is seeking feedback from residents, visitors, businesses and decision-makers alike to help inform the Transportation and Cycling Master Plans.
A mix of online and public consultations will take place throughout the process. The consultations are designed to build public awareness, establish public support and gather feedback.
The first in-person public consultation will take place on Thursday, August 27 from 3-4 p.m. and 7-8 p.m. at the Prince Edward Community Centre/Picton Arena at 375 Main Street Picton, with strict physical distancing measures in effect. Registration is mandatory.
