A set play off an offensive zone draw with just seconds left in the contest allowed the Heidelberg Materials U15 Prince Edward County Minor Hockey Association Kings to get past the host North Frontenac Flyers Saturday afternoon.
With time winding down and the Kings pressing for the go ahead goal, pivot Will Prinzen drew the assignment of winning a face off clean to winger Easton Vanhecke. Mr. Prinzen teed up the puck perfectly for his linemate who wired home the game winner with 30 seconds left in match.
It was the second snipe for Mr. Vanhecke. He opened the scoring for the Kings in the first when he fired the puck past Flyers netminder Cole Brash with 2:22 left in the opening frame.
North Frontenac’s Jesse Garrison spoiled Landon Latchaford’s shutout bid partway through the second frame but that was the only volley to beat the Kings netminder in the outing.
With the win, the Kings moved their Eastern Ontario Minor Hockey League record to 8-3-1, leapfrogging the Napanee Stars and into third place in the U15 circuit. The Kings only trail the Douro Dukes by a pair of points for second while Ennismore remains undefeated through a dozen games.
The local look to put a bow on 2024 this Saturday when they host the Brighton Bolts in Wellington. Puck drop is 4:30 p.m.
