On February 10th at approximately 1:30 p.m. PEC fire personnel responded to a trailer fire at Walt’s Sugar Shack on Salem Road.
Responders from Stations 6 (Consecon), 8 (Carrying Place) and 9 (Ameliasburgh) were on scene and observed, upon arrival, a fully involved trailer fire which extended to a sugar shack.
“The trailer was totally destroyed,” stated Jane Walt to The Gazette. “And our pump house storage building was damaged. We should know in the next week how our equipment is. Were gonna have to wait until we can get everything cleaned out of there.”
The fire was quickly brought under control by first responders and caused a combined total of $50,000 in damages. There were no injuries.
“What this means for the business is a little more work and a little longer hours,” Walt expressed. “But we’ll survive, were gonna move forward and we can’t thank our friends, family and community enough…they reached out and helped us in a time of need.”
According to Deputy Fire Chief Tim Kraemer, the fire is not considered to be suspicious.
“A reminder to all residents that working smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms are required in all residential occupancies,” said Kraemer. “Working and maintaining smoke alarms can provide you with early detection to escape smoke and fire. Residents are encouraged to practice their home escape plan regularly.”
