A new Mobi-Mat at Wellington’s Rotary Beach creates a pathway across the sand for people using wheelchairs, and for families with strollers, to enjoy being beachside.
Two floating beach wheelchairs, Mobi-Chairs, are also available for people who require them when the warmer weather comes.
The Wellington Rotary Club raised the funds to create an accessible beach. The Corona brewing company is a major sponsor; it has a national campaign to increase beach accessibility.
In consultation with Wade Watts, of Watts Accessibility Consulting, Council, staff, and the Accessibility Advisory Committee developed the plan and design.
“This project supports the County’s commitment to ensure accessibility and inclusion for all residents and visitors,” says Ken Robertson, Past-President of the Wellington Rotary Club. “Our members are incredibly proud to take the lead on this project, which aligns with the Rotary Club’s desire to further diversity, equity and inclusion.”
“Thanks to Corona’s Accessing Paradise Pledge, Canadians with mobility limitations will be able to enjoy sunsets on more beaches this summer. I am excited to be one of them.”
“The Wellington Rotary Beach is truly a gem in our town. These improvements will help even more people cool off this summer and enjoy the majestic sunsets,” said Corey Engelsdorfer, Wellington’s Councillor.
The Mobi-Chairs will be stored at the beach during the summer. The beach steward, who starts work in a couple of weeks, will provide access.
