Mayor Steve Ferguson, Interim CAO Adam Goheen and a half dozen councillors joined colleagues from hundreds of municipalities at the Rural Ontario Municipal Association (ROMA) conference in Toronto earlier this month.
The County delegation — Councillors Sam Branderhorst, Chris Braney, Sam Grosso, Kate MacNaughton, Bill Roberts, and Phil St-Jean — met with Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing Rob Flack to advocate for further provincial investments in water and wastewater infrastructure.
Mayor Ferguson also urged the Ministry to reinstate rent controls, and to begin property tax assessments in Ontario. Properties were last assessed in 2016.
The local delegation also met with MPP Andrew Dowie, Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Environment, Conservation and Parks (MECP), about false emergency service calls in provincial parks. In 2025, Prince Edward County spent over $142,000 answering calls to local provincial parks.
Mayor Ferguson said the calls are costly and divert Fire and Rescue services during the peak tourism season.
More than half of Fire & Rescue water calls last year came from Sandbanks and North Beach.
