The Wellington Dukes utilized a big third period in North York on Sunday afternoon to best the host Rangers and notch their fifth straight Ontario Junior Hockey League victory.
Down 2-0 into the final frame, Wellington would light the lamp four times over the final 20 minutes to win 4-2 and move their record to 12-7-2. With the win, the Dukes leapfrogged the St. Mike’s Buzzers and into third place in the Eastern Confrence.
A total of four different Dukes would score to lead the club to victory. Mason Goodfellow would cue the comeback with his third of the campaign 3:03 into the stanza. Ethan Quick’s eighth of the season just 1:57 later would square the affair at 2-2.
Then, Wellington pulled ahead for good when Mr. Goodfellow demonstrated good puck sense and set up Ben Vreugdenhil at 10:21.
Hayden Pimm would salt the game away for Wellington, firing home his first of the season into a vacated North York net with just four seconds left.
Jack Lisson made 22 saves to pick up the win in the Wellington net.
On Wednesday night, the Dukes needed double overtime to do it but the local Jr. A hockey outfit left Georgetown’s Mold Masters Sportsplex as winners, shading the host Raiders 2-1.
Mr. Quick was the hero of the day on Wednesday, collecting a Connor Hunt pass and depositing it past Georgetown starter Finn Wilson at 1:30 of double OT.
The Dukes were full value for the win as they tested Mr. Wilson 61 times in the game. Wellington’s other goal came off the stick of Dimtiri-Alexander Tzaferis at the end of the first.
Wellington netminder Shane Shelest was the winning goalie, making 32 stops.
Last Sunday, Wellington stifled the Stoufville Spirit 5-3. Mr. Shelest was the winner while Mr. Quick, Justin Pare (2), Caleb MacDonald and Austin Montgomery-Parsons all scored for Wellington who travel to Stoufville Thursday in an attempt to replicate the win, this time on the road.
On Friday, the Dukes return to Lehigh Arena to host conference rival Cobourg for the first time this season.
LEDES AT LEHIGH: With the club obtaining the rights of Mr. Shelest from Okotoks of the Alberta league earlier this month, the Dukes sent County product Nolan Lane to the Renfrew Wolves of the Central Canadian Hockey League. Mr. Lane immediately endeared himself to his new team Saturday night, making 30 stops in a 2-1 win over the Hawkesbury Hawks, picking up his first CCHL win.
