An iconic Canadian company with upwards of 300 locations has its sights set on a Mid-July opening at the Picton Plaza.

A new Bulk Barn store will be the latest addition to the local grocery offering, taking over part of the former Sobey’s location that was vacated when that store opened its new outlet on George Wright Boulevard. 

Having already taking possession of the new location, Bulk Barn will be opening their doors to the community July 15th.

The store has made its mark in Canada since 1982 by offering a plethora of regular and exotic food items in bulk quantities. Priced by weight, customers are allowed to purchase as much or as little as they need. President and CEO of Bulk Barn Foods Limited, Jason O’Field, spoke with The Gazette about the new store and why they choose the location they did.

“We’ve considered the County, and the community of Picton specifically, for several years. We felt the timing was right as we believe the population base along with the strength of our brand recognition was the right time for a store opening,” expressed O’Field. “With Sobey’s relocating, a wonderful location became available so we worked to secure a lease and situated ourselves on Main Street.   My wife’s aunt, who I refer to as Aunt Sue, lives on East Lake and when the location became available, I phoned Aunt Sue on a Tuesday morning at 7 a.m. to ask for her thoughts knowing she’s an advocate for a Bulk Barn store in the community. Once she figured out who was phoning that early in the morning, she told me this was the right location; parking is great and it’s in the heart of town.  I drove the market and agreed with Aunt Sue, so we did the deal.”

The company’s hope by opening a store in Picton is to provide members of the community with a unique and exciting shopping experience.

“We provide quality products at competitive prices while giving everyone the option of buying as much or as little as they’d like,” O’Field said. “We are advocates for providing a sustainable shopping experience and will promote 15 per cent off all regular priced items on SUSTAINABLE SUNDAYS as a way to further entice everyone to try shopping with our reusable container program.  It’s a win-win for customers and the environment in a beautiful community that values the land they live on.  We also provide all seniors and students with a 15 per cent discount every Wednesday and this promotion seems to be a hit in all communities we join.”

For the first two weeks Picton’s Bulk Barn will be offering 25 per cent off all products in store. This Grand Opening sale will allow customers a chance to try the selection the store carries at a discounted price.

“We are running this Grand Opening sale to give customers a chance to try the great selection we have to offer, experience the quality of our products while saving some money and get experience of what Bulk Barn is all about,” enthused O’Field. “We encourage anyone who loves food and wants to enjoy a fun retail experience to come and take a tour of our store on July 15^th when we open.”
