The Jean Lynch Scholarship Award (JLSA) is a $1000 scholarship open to employees of H.J. McFarland Memorial Home, their children and/or their grandchildren who are pursing a post-secondary education.
The 2019 recipient of the award is Janine Caldwell, a staff member at the home for the past six years.
The family of Jean Lynch, a past resident of H.J. McFarland for nine years, established the JLSA in her honour after her death in 2016.
“I had the opportunity to work with Jean Lynch, and I feel honoured the family chose me to receive the scholarship,” Caldwell said. “Thanks to the award, I will be able to focus on my education rather than worrying how I will be able to afford it.”
Caldwell is currently enrolled in the recreation and leisure program at Candor College and has served as a personal support worker and housekeeper at the County-run long-term care home. For the past 18 months she has also worked as an activity aide.
“Janine (Caldwell) always conducts herself professionally. She is polite and courteous to residents, staff, families, and visitors,” Natasha Williams, Acting Administrator at H.J. McFarland Memorial Home said. “Janine is creative when it comes to planning social activities, and she is always willing to collaborate with her peers to advance new ideas. She is a well deserving recipient of the JLSA.”
The daughters of Lynch, Joy Vervoort and Ann Trick, along with Ann’s husband David, established the scholarship to give back to the staff of H.J. McFarland for the loving care they provided Lynch for the many years she spend there.
