Back for the summer is Picton’s free community art program, The Art Kitchen. This year, the program reinvents itself with more offerings and a new location.
“The Art Kitchen has been running off and on in the County since 2019, and has been through many iterations,” explained Department of Illumination (DOI) Artistic Director Krista Dalby. “At its core, this program really is about bringing people of all ages and abilities together to make art and share community.”
The drop-in program welcomes all who wish to create art in the company of others, while providing some materials to do so.
There is no cost to participate in this program.
DOI, a local arts organization, is reportedly excited to bring back their popular program alongside a new program called The Guitar Kitchen.
The Guitar Kitchen will be run by Macartney Mulridge. Residents are invited to bring their own guitar or borrow one of available on site and get a guitar lesson in the park.
This summer The Art Kitchen and The Guitar Kitchen will take place in a new venue: London Avenue Park in Macaulay Village, otherwise known as The Heights. Led by artist Nella Casson, The Art Kitchen will take place Mondays from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
All are welcome to join in and work on personal artistic projects in any medium. There will be some basic art supplies on hand.
The Art Kitchen and The Guitar Kitchen are supported by Alternatives for Women, The Picton Business Improvement Association, and The Prince Edward Learning Centre.
In case of rain the program will run as scheduled, relocating to The Department of Illumination studio in the lower level of The Armoury, 206 Main St. Picton. Updates can be found on DOI social media.
DOI was founded in 2013 by a group of artists in Prince Edward County, Ontario, who came together to create the Firelight Lantern Festival. Since then, they have created a number of artistic events, workshops and festivals, including: the Firelight Lantern Festival, the Scarecrow Festival, Ice Box, Alvar, and Wild Thing, to name a few.
Their objective, apart from making and sharing art, is to bring people together for shared experience. They are a registered not-for-profit organization.
